I will be visiting Spain and Andorra May 18-25. Let's organize a meetup!
A few months ago, I wrote about how I have a legal obligation to go to Spain, and in particular, the Catalonian-speaking part of Spain and/or other Catalonian-speaking parts of the world.
Tl;Dr: I will be in Barcelona & Andorra May 18 - 25 (mostly Barcelona and the Spanish parts of the Catalonian region).
If you are in that part of the world, we should hang out! And maybe organize a thing, ideally with wine.
Here’s a bit of the backstory on why my domain name (priva.cat) obligates me to be warm and enjoy good food in May.
For those less familiar with the intricacies of domain name registration, the reason I’m obligated to write about Catalonia (or its people, customs, language, culture, or articles in the Catalan language), is because this domain includes .cat — which is top-level domain for the Catalonian linguistic and cultural communities. More precisely, .cat, is a sponsored top-level domain intended to be used to highlight the Catalan language, approved by ICANN in September 2005 (here’s Wikipedia’s discussion of it).
Technically speaking, in order to register this domain, I need to either meet or commit to abiding by one of these requirements:
be a part of the Catalan community.
already have content in Catalan published online.
have access to a special code (sometimes called ENS), issued during special promotions or by agreements with certain institutions.
develop activities (in any language) to promote the Catalan culture and language.
be endorsed by 3 people or 1 institution already using a .cat domain name.
As I mentioned in that post, while the domain name rules aren’t enforced very often, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t at least try to make an effort. Especially if it involves visiting a beautiful part of the world to explore its rich cultural heritage, eat my way through Catalan cuisine, enjoy the vino of the region’s 12 different designated appellations of origin, and check in on the Sagrada Familia to see whether it’s finally done yet (this is a joke. It will never be fully complete).
My Rough Flexible Itinerary
I will be landing in Barcelona on May 18 (coming directly from Venice Privacy Symposium). Husbot will be in attendance! You guys get to meet Husbot!!!
I will leave Barcelona on May 25.
I would like to set up at least one get-together/meetup/fake TED talk while I’m there. It will be in Barcelona.
I will probably head to Andorra sometime in between (say, May 21-23) and maybe other parts of the Catalonian parts of Spain.
I don’t know if I will have a car. We have no idea where we’ll be staying. YOLO!
Suggestions of any kind are VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.
A few of you expressed an interest in meeting up or maybe even having a discussion/seminar or something vaguely formal. I will be reaching out to a few folks who suggested such things and see if we can coordinate something. If not, I will try to find a spot where a few of us can meet up at and chat over wine and maybe a shared Arròs negre.
My Catalonian language skills consist of the following words/phrases: bon dia, salut, quatre gats (obviously), parla anglès, and merci. My Spanish is… not much better.
